Science Team Projects Due Date & reiteration of guidelines

Presenting Dec 8:
Amond & Luke
Evan & Eileen

Presenting Dec 15:
Kirty & Bethany
Abigail & Amber

Remember:
All team members must speak an equal amount of time. The time limit is 4-7 minutes per team.
Each team should have a information sheet available to handout to each of the students, as well as for me. This can be either in report style or a creative style (newspaper, postcard, brochure, etc).
You should showcase some type of experiment to support your topic. Make sure that you can explain the experiment process to the class.
You should use posters, powerpoint, and/or some other type of media to showcase your presentation. Please let me know what style(s) you'll be incorporating.
You can choose to present on a particular aspect of one module, or a module in its entirety. You can choose anything from Module 1-8. :)
Also, both team members should donate equal study, prep, and research time to the project. Work as a team. Please include a sheet listing any websites or resources you used in addition to your textbook.

If you have questions, let me know. I can't wait to see what you all come up with.

November 10, Module 6 cont'd

Class:
We went over experiment 6.3 and the last pages of the module, answering the last OYO.

Experiment:
Experiment 6.3
"A hard-boiled egg can be used to model the idea of plate tectonics. The shell represents the crust of the earth, while the rubbery egg white represents the plastic rock of the mantle. IF you cut out a 'plate' on the egg and move it around, you will get an idea of what plate tectonics is all about." p144
 Homework:
  • Friday - p150-2, OYO 6.10
  • Monday - SG questions 1-8, STUDY
  • Tuesday -SG questions 9-24, STUDY
  • Wednesday -  Module 6 Test

November 3, Module 6: Earth & the Lithosphere

Class:
We reviewed pages up to  OYO 6.1, as well as went through experiment 6.1.
All science project teams were assigned. They are as follows:
Evan & Eileen
Abigail & Amber
Luke & Amond
Kirty & Bethany

Experiment:
Experiment 6.1: How Sound Travels Through Different Substances
"Study of the mantle and core makes use of the fact that waves travel differently in different substances. In this experiment, you will make use os sound waves in order to 'see' this effect." p134.

Homework:
Friday - lab report
Monday - p137-143, OYO 6.4-5
Tuesday - p143-7, OYO 6.6-7
Wednesday -  p147-150, OYO 6.8-9

October 13, Module 5: The Hydrosphere

Class:
Today we played a game in class to help review the concepts learned in modules 1-4 and answered several questions on the Module 4 test. We also went over pages 105-114 and answered OYO 5.1-4. We also began a project showcasing each part of the hydrologic cycle.

Experiment:
Experiment 5.1: Evaporation, Condensation, and Precipitation
"In the hydrologic cycle, water can be transferred from a saltwater source (the ocean) to a freshwater source through the process of evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. This experiment will show you how that works." p110
Homework:
  • Friday - experiment 5.1, lab report
  • Monday -p114-6, OYO 5.5-6
  • Tuesday - p116-120, OYO 5.7
  • Wednesday -  p120-2, OYO 5.8-9

October 13, Module 4 cont'd

Class:
Today, we completed experiment 4.5. After going over pages 97-99, we answered 4.12.

Experiment:
Experiment 4.5: Water's Cohesion
"Water molecules are attracted to one another by hydrogen bonds as well as the electrical charges taht are the result of polarity. Because they are attracted to one another, they do not like to be pulled apaprt, as this experiment will demonstrate." p98.

Homework:
  • Friday - lab report, p99-100
  • Monday - SG questions 1-6, STUDY
  • Tuesday -SG questions 7-14, STUDY
  • Wednesday -  Test Module 4
Special Reminder: Each student is expected to give a presentation on a concept or module learned during the first semester (modules 1-8). This may be an individual or team project. Details will be posted in the Science Project Detail Page in the next two weeks.

September 29, Module 4: The Wonder of Water

    Class:
Our class began with an experiment and concluded by going over pages 81-84 and answering OYO 4.1.

    Experiment:
Experiment 4.1: The Chemical Composition of Water
"In Module 1, you observed the electrolysis of water by attaching wires to a battery and placing those wires in a solution of water and baking soda. In this experiment, you will use a slightly different method of water electrolysis to demonstrate the chemical composition of water." p82-3.
    Homework:
    • Friday - Lab report, p84-6, OYO 4.1
    • Monday - p86-90, OYO 4.5-7
    • Tuesday - p90-93, OYO 4.8-9
    • Wednesday - p93-97, OYO 4.10-11

    Don't forget!
    1. Make sure that turn in your OYO questions once the chapter is completed as I explained in class today.

    2. If you haven't turned in Module 1-3 OYO, tests, or study guides, please gather those things together this week and turn them in so I can grade them.

    3. ALSO: DO NOT throw away any of your papers. They should be kept in your binder. I will review your binders and add up the grades at the midpoint and end of each session.
